Co-op Dividend FAQs

I’m a member and didn’t receive a dividend.

To receive a dividend, you must have spent at least $1,795 associated with your membership during the 2022 fiscal year.

Why did I get a dividend last year and not this year?

Dividends are based on the Co-op’s profit. The Co-op had a larger profit associated with member sales in 2021 therefore the amount allocated for dividends was larger.

The mailing address with my membership is old.

I just joined, will I receive a dividend?

The dividend is based on purchases made during the Co-op’s fiscal year which was December 26, 2021 to December 31, 2022. If you joined after December 31, 2022, you would not be eligible for a dividend.

How is the dividend calculated?

This dividend is a percentage of the Co-op’s net profit from member purchases. The Board of Directors determines if a dividend will be issued for the prior fiscal year, and if so, the size of the dividend, based on the Co-op’s financial results and operational expenses.

How is the divided amount determined?

The total dividend amount is determined based on the Co-op’s profit and then a percentage is applied equally to all member sales to determine each member’s dividend.

I no longer live in Bellingham and am unable to use my dividend in the store.

You can donate your dividend by clicking here or you can request a check to be sent to you. Please email [email protected] with your name, member number, and dividend amount to request a check. Check requests may take up to 10 business days to be processed.

Your dividend is associated with your membership. Next time you shop, tell your cashier your membership number and let them know you would like to use your dividend.

Will I receive a dividend next year?

A dividend is a wonderful benefit to Co-op membership. The Co-op’s ability to pay a member dividend is directly related to the financial health of the Co-op, our profitability, and most importantly, the amount you shop. The more of your grocery dollar you spend at the Co-op, the more that money is recirculated in our local economy and potentially paid back to you as a member.

Do I receive a dividend if I close my membership?

Only current members receive dividends. If you close your membership, you will not receive a future dividend based on purchases prior to closing your membership.

Can other members of my household redeem my dividend?

No. Dividends earned on your account can only be used by the membership account holder.

Can a cashier tell me my total transactions total for the given year?

No. If you would like to request your transaction total for the year, please email [email protected].

How do returns affect my dividend?

Returns are deducted from your eligible dividend earnings balance.

What happens if I forgot to give my membership number on a previous purchase?

If you forget to identify as a member when you make a purchase, you have 30 days to bring the receipt to the store service desk to have the purchase credited to your member account. Purchases made before you were a member, or more than 30 days old, cannot be applied to your member account.

What happens to a dividend after a member passes away?

The executor of the estate of the member or identified beneficiary may contact the Co-op at [email protected] and the dividend will be paid out to the estate’s beneficiary.
