Co-Chair, Neighbors for Bellingham Transportation Fund
Thank you to the Board of the Community Food Co-op for endorsing the renewal of the Bellingham Transportation Fund and a Yes vote on Proposition 2020-14.
The Transportation Fund provides one of the most economical and equitable ways your vote will make a difference for people who live, work, or travel in Bellingham.
These infrastructure projects help people get where they need to go.
- Elementary and middle schools have new sidewalks where there were none.
- People who use wheelchairs or strollers can cross the street & go up an accessible ramp.
- Crosswalks with flashing signals make it easier to cross a busy street to the bus stop.
- Families who use bikes can go to parks and schools
The Transportation Fund provides dedicated funding to meet Bellingham’s transportation needs. Across the city, this includes preventive street maintenance through repaving, improved transit access, sidewalks, crosswalks, bikeways, and flashing signals for safe crossing. All projects include accessibility improvements to meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – including curb ramps for complete access to bus stops.
Equity – To prioritize equity, 70% of non-motorized projects and projects for safe access to transit were built in low-to-moderate income neighborhoods. Accessibility and transit dependent areas have also been important factors.
Jobs – Ten years ago when Bellingham voters approved this ballot measure, we were in the middle of the recession. What was true then is even more crucial this year. JOBS. Whatcom & Skagit contractors are the companies & workers doing the work. This is how we keep Bellingham moving forward.
Cost-effective – The Fund has provided seed dollars to gain $4.3 million in state and federal grants – such as the Safe Routes to Schools programs. Maintenance through repaving streets prevents much more costly street replacement. Renewal maintains the same rate and builds on our community investments.
Thank you for recognizing the value & potential in the Transportation Fund. More information on the campaign website.
We invite you to join us by volunteering or donating to the Neighbors for Bellingham Transportation Fund. This will be the at the end of the Bellingham ballot. Start there and vote Yes on Proposition 2020-14.
